Modern Steak

This was a decent place for high end steak. We went on a Saturday night after having a craving for some beef. Decided to get the wagyu rib eye steak, done Chicago style medium rare. The waiter asked us to cut the steak upon being served to ensure the steak was done at the right temperature. This shows you that they really care about what they serve you. The steak was seasoned perfectly and plated beautifully with garlic and reduced balsamic as seen on the photo. Modern steak also has a fantastic selection of sides. We picked the roasted beets and poutine. That was also super delicious. For the price point, this is a reasonable high end steak house. 5/5 stars

Without a doubt, the best steak I’ve had in Calgary. Light years ahead of any of the steakhouses in the area. Go here.

Struggling to find out why this place even has the odd good review I went back for lunch. It would be tough to find a waiter less interested in his job then the guy we had...……. For food we each had a couple filets, mine was burnt to a crisp on the outside and absolutely no flavour. I gave it 1 star because the dumplings were good as a starter. Too many good options downtown for lunch and this is not one of them

I've tried the original Modern Steak a couple times, so when they opened up Modern Steak on Stephen Ave, I just had to give it a try.This location is awesome, it will eventually have 3 sections but currently there are just two as the Roof top is not open yet and it's the Winter.I tried Modern Bar and I was a tad worried as it would be pub food. But it was much more then that. Elegant and each and every bite left your mouth watering and wanting more. Highly recommend getting the Truffle fries with your sandwich or burger. I had the chefs sandwich which was amazing!!!I am beyond happy with this location. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful and the decor was so breathtaking and elegant. Thank you for a wonderful experience at this new location!

Great atmosphere. We went there for a birthday and they presented us with a birthday card and free baked Alaska dessert. Our server was very pleasant and the food was amazing (tomahawk for 2). Try their house hash side, really good. The only downside is that the steak didnt come with any veggies. Most places include some veggies with the meat in addition to the side you order.

Ordered takeout for my partner's birthday and it was really disappointing. We both ordered the modern benchmark black Angus ribeye steaks at medium rare and one of them was a solid medium. 3/5 flavour and 1/5 tenderness. It was quite dry. The menu sets up your expectations for it to be the best steak in Alberta with their breakdown of the region and the cut, as well as their own ranking system for what's considered the most tender and most flavourful steak. Was super over priced and we won't be coming back here again.

Consistently fantastic food and service. Always a great ambience going, and great conversations with servers. Wagyu dumplings and the Modern benchmark rib-eye are a couple of our favorites. Servers really go above and beyond to explain the menu and the Modern Steak process. Geoff (or Jeff?) was awesome, gave some great beer recommendations which my +1 enjoyed. Great job guys - a class act all around, servers have a clear pride for what they do and commitment to excellence.

It was our first real night out without our new born son (with grandma) so we decided to book an evening with @modernsteak because their menu online looked delicious... and we were right! Thank you for our first time dining and it was a great experience. Atmosphere was inviting/cozy, food was perfectly cooked, timing was great, service and hostess were fantanstic. I would reccomend people reading this to try dinner @modernsteak on stephen ave. Thank you very much !

Went here for a business lunch, ordered the tomahawk steak.Price is high but expected for its location, service is good, the assortment of different types of salts for the steak is excellent. Since the steak was so large and was time consuming to eat, the plate it came on didn't stay hot for long enough. Take out bags is a nice touch.

This was a great option for a client lunch downtown. He was a big fan of Modern Steak and had never been to this new location. Very trendy and centrally located connected to the Hyatt Hotel. Thanks for the great service Barbara as well!

The food and service were good however the price was just too high for my tastes. I swear it wasn’t that expensive before but for one steak the average price was $60. For a price like this I’d rather go to Wellington’s, Cattle Baron or the Keg.

Absolutely incredible food. Pricey, but worth every cent. Very nice vibe be the occasion romance, celebration, or just a fancy treat to dinner. And the steak is simply superb.

(Visited August 2019)My wife and I visited for dinner while visiting Calgary for the 3rd time and I am annoyed we haven’t found it sooner! The steak was delicious and amongst the best we have ever had. I had the Wagyu striploin and my wife the grass-fed fillet from the Wild Rose farm. For sides we shared mushrooms and truffle parmesan fries (and a side each to share was enough!) We also enjoyed the baked Alaska for dessert. We also can’t commend Brendan enough for his fantastic service throughout the meal. He was professional, friendly and polite throughout. He was also knowledgeable about the beef and passionate about it as well.

Definitely one of the best steakhouse I've went to. We had the "All the Wagyu" platter, and it was amazing.

The food and service were really great

Playing at the top of the food chain they get rated to a higher standard. The decor is modern /chic yet showing its age. Service from start to finish is perfect. The menu and wine list offer great choices and we’ll need a few more visits to check it out fully.My steak was a bit overdone and my giant baked potato could have used a few more minutes in the oven. Baked Alaska? Nobody has served that in 20+ years yet here it is on the menu. It’s not to be missed. Parking in Kensington is a bit tough but this place has the advantage of a lot right across the street. We’ll be back :)

Fantastic steak with absolutely fantastic customer service. This is the second tims I've been here and both experiences have been top notch. The ambiance gives it a classy feel along with the knowledge waiters. We had Jeff serving us and he had a great mix of humour and professionalism. The Tomahawk Steak for $99 as well as the Date Night Special on Wednesdays are the best times to go. I will most definitely be returning in the future!

Nice patio. Creative menu, although i was expecting more steak dishes. Food is OK, happy hour menu is only for drinks. Service wasn't great nor frequent.

Despite my wife's best efforts to turn me into a vegetarian, she agreed to go to Modern Steak tonight with some very good friends. When we have red meat at home, she'll usually abstain, and when I have a steak at a restaurant she'll sometimes have a bite of mine and admit that it is OK. Well tonight I encouraged her to order her own fillet and I think that the biggest testament to the fine cut, preparation, presentation and flavor of the steak isn't that I loved it because I already love steak. It was that she loved it and would come back again.

Birthday dinner at Modern Steak - my boyfriend and I both agree it was some of the best service we’ve ever had - thank you to our server Brendan who made it so amazing! There was a birthday card signed by the whole staff when I arrived, free glass of champagne and free dessert. The truffle popcorn at the start was great and Brendan even packed up an extra box for us to take home later. Waygu steak was awesome too. If anyone is looking for a place to celebrate a special occasion go to Modern Steak!

Beyond words! The Tomahawk steak was out of this world! The beet salad was amazing and the baked Alaskan was the best desert I ever had. George was our waiter ... So attentive and knowledgeable. The entire staff from the manager who took my reservation to the host, and all who walked by .. always looking at us and not shying away from eye contact! Very impressed. Well done

Outstanding food. The beef is raised locally and cooked exceptionally well. Side dishes are well-crafted and very satisfying in themselves. The quality of the oysters was an unexpected surprise. The servers are a bit too brash, but all in all it's a great dining experience. Highly recommended.

I found the steaks were the same as I have had at other restaurants on Stephen Ave. But at the premium prices that you pay for steak, there better be a variety of beef to chose from instead of only beef from Alberta. Would I go there again? No.

Top class between the food, service, and ambiance. Barb was fantastic, going above and beyond what is expected from even exceptional waiters/waitresses. Made for a memorable night out with friends - we wish them the best (their new patio area looks like it will be a huge hit in the summer)

Folks. Listen. You want an incredible dinner experience? Head to one of Calgary's Modern Steak restaurants and take in some of their true #AlbertaBeef! Better yet, bring your sweetheart or a friend for the Wednesday Night Date Night special. We had a fair sized group there tonight. It was a first for all of us and we are already planning the next one. If the quality and service tonight is any indication of what to expect at their seafood restaurant Modern Ocean - I can't get there soon enough! Wow! Cheers!

If I had to sum up our experience in one word, it would be "Devine". From start to finish we had a great experience. Our server Is Brendan was amazing and we'll try to request him on our next visit. Brenden explained the whole menu, gave us very specific details about the cuts of beef and the cattle it comes from and also recommended some fabulous wine. We had truffled popcorn as a snack to start, yummy! Each and everyone one of us enjoyed our meal. You get a side dish with your steak, we all ordered something different and shared. Each one tasted amazing! We spent a couple hours eating, drinking and enjoying our time with friends. I highly recommend this restaurant, it's worth the money.
